Rancho Santa Margarita, CA — On 2nd day of Trinity League “Individual” Tournament (doubles included, just means it’s not a team event) all of our girls held heads high and represented our school well. Semi-Finals means they were in the “Final Four” to steal a college basketball phrase. Singles player Sophia Staff, and both doubles teams: Erica Gonzalez with Olivia Nowlan and Sofia Recupero with Taylor Mindte all had to play the top 1-2 seeded players in the entire league, all from Santa Margarita. We lost all 3 matches in straight sets, before playing for 3rd vs 4th places, back to the 8-game pro set format used yesterday. Sophia Staff placed 4th, losing 4-8 vs the only other player in semis, not from SMCHS, Marin Morgan from Mater Dei. Both these girls played tough first round matches, and dueled it out in the heat. Sophia had defeated her on Tuesday 6-2 in our dual match vs Mater Dei, but today, Marin returned the favor. The doubles match for 3rd vs 4th was an all JSerra event: Erica and Olivia vs Sofia and Taylor. Because we were rudely confined to only 2 courts w narrow gate views for spectators, and time constraints, we sent these girls back to JSerra to play this match. Sofia and Taylor won 8-4 to take “bronze”. Again, so very proud of all these girls stepping up at season’s end to shock and awe SMCHS, keeping 5 of them out of the final day of competition. Well done: 1st Team All League All Stars! Sorry for lack of photos today, literally no access to do so. Next up: support Varsity girls at CIF home match next week. Date and Time TBD.
