McPherson, KS — From: https://www.midkansasonline.com/2022/03/30/weather-halts-boys-tennis-invitational/ At one point Tuesday, it was clear, sunny and 80 degrees. Everything you could ask for out of the Invitational to open the season, but as teams were wrapping up semifinal action lighting and rain threatened the area, forcing an end to the tournament, in which was a successful day for the Bullpups. “I was extremely nervous going into today due to so many things going on leading up to our home opener.” said Bullpup Tennis Coach Tyler Brown. “We had bad weather starting the season which made it tough to practice, spring break, and a music trip to Chicago, which involved almost half our team, leading into our first meet.” However, the Bullpups were able to make the most of the practice time that they did have, putting together some impressive scores on the day. Jaden Fox won 8-1, 8-0 and 8-0 and found himself in the championship. Ayden Johnson also had a great day after shaking off some first round jitters. Once he got the 8-6 win in the first round he went on to win 8-3 in the quarterfinals and then lost to the No. 2 seed in the tournament 8-6, in the semifinal match, and was getting ready to play for 3rd before the weather hit. “Our doubles also came ready,” said Brown. Wesley Wurm and Ty Kraemer were also in the Championship before the weather hit and ended the tournament. Winning 8-3 in the first round, 8-2 in the quarterfinals and an 8-7 tiebreaker in the semifinals against Winfield. Tyler Bontrager and Kayden McVicker were 2-1 on the day and were set to play in the 3rd place match. The Pups had a red and a white team competing yesterday. Team White featured; Josh Everhart went 1-2 on the day and was playing for 11th, Bryson Archer went 1-2 on the day playing for 7th. Bishop Brown and Alex Berger also went 1-2 on the day and would’ve been playing for 7th, and Braden Razak and Connor Olson went 2-2 for 13th. “I’m pretty sure we were set to win the tournament as a team if it wasn’t for the lightning and rain at the end. At the worst we were going to have two 2nd place finishes and two 4th place finishes” added Brown. “I felt the boys showed mental toughness and found a way to win matches today in gusts of 50 mph and sprinkles at times.” The Bullpup Varsity will travel to Conway Springs Thursday, for a quad that includes Chaparral and Hutch Trinity at 3 p.m.
