Derby, KS — Individual results: #1 Singles- Viggo McHenry (1-2) 7th place #2 Singles- Roary Whorton (0-3) 8th place #1 Doubles- Charlie Krug/Owen Neighbors (1-2) 4th place #2 Doubles- Pierce Hamma/Hunter Mendez (2-1) 2nd place Today was the first tournament of the year for all six of these players. Our nerves were evident throughout the tournament but all were able to settle down and play some good tennis. Both singles players had tough competition and we just couldn’t find our consistency today. That’s one area that a lot of the younger players need to put extra focus on in practice so that it can translate to tournament play. Both Viggo and Roary were able to finish out the day with their best showing in their final matches. Charlie and Owen lost two very close matches, including a 9-7 tiebreaker in the semifinals. Throughout the tournament they showed flashes of excellent doubles play and then nerves got the best of us at times. Hunter played in his first tennis tournament in almost three years but his court coverage and movement at the net looked excellent. Pierce gave his opponents trouble all day with his big serves and presence at the net. Pierce and Hunter lost a close tiebreaker in the championship match that had great points throughout. As we get back on the practice courts, all of these players have things to work on, but now that they’ve seen tournament play, hopefully that will bring some extra focus so we can translate it to competition.
