Rancho Cucamonga, CA — Check out TeamPages for all the details for the team's season. https://www.teampages.com/teams/1063519-Los-Osos-Cross-Country-cross-country-running-team-website/announcements Coach's recap: We’ve had good days and we’ve had bad days at Red Hill Park, and that can be said for most courses, but for some reason, the searing heat of most years stands out. That heat, along with a difficult course run mostly in grass, can take its toll, and the memory of 104 degrees last year was burned in most people’s minds. The temperatures fell this year and the times predictably followed. Still warm, but vastly better than last year. This was the first meeting of the Baseline League of the year and in terms of scoring and qualifying for the post-season, it meant nothing. The league coaches, in a meeting at the end of August, voted to follow what many other leagues do, and make this a preview meet…a chance to see where you stand while having no bearing on the season. AD’s voted to follow the coaches wishes this morning and that made it mostly official, with principals still to vote. The other recommendation was to eliminate the second league meet, which means everything will ride on League Finals, which is the idea, so that the best teams at the end of the season represent your league. Slated for auto timing, the system didn’t work, and that left the hosts scrambling. It all worked out in the end, probably better than the stickers on the boards used in the past. While the meet didn’t have meaning for league standings, it had plenty of meaning for the Grizzlies, as this was the Monterey trip qualifier to those 7 fastest. It also was a chance to improve upon the times from a year ago in the heat…and most did. The boys find themselves in a very competitive situation in a battle for the final CIF spot and the results mostly mirrored what we saw at Woodbridge. The Grizzlies, led by Noah Chairez’ 2nd place finish, battled their way into 4th place, 20 points off a CIF berth. We will have to get better and close the gap as we tend to do between this meet and league finals, but it was a game effort by the boys, who all posted big improvements with the exception of Fernando Hernandez and Jacob Winter, both having not run here last year. Chairez is the first boy to crack the top 10 on this course since 2017 as he notched the 9th fastest time ever, but we should note that a course change in 2010 made it much slower and more difficult, and half the times on the list are from the faster course. The girls are in the meat grinder that is the Baseline League, staring up at 4 teams that have all seen themselves ranked in the top 10 in their respective divisions already in this young season. Predictably, they finished still staring up at them, but they looked good, ran competitively, and that’s really all you can ask for. After three successive meets, the team can take a breath as there is no race until October 1st where we travel to Carbon Canyon Regional Park to compete in the Brea Invitational, which is always a favorite. Taking a breath means getting some good training in over the next week and a half. Results (improvement from last year noted): Varsity Boys: Team Scores – 1. Rancho Cucamonga – 35; 2.
