Thompsonville, MI — Caledonia's ski teams traveled north last Sunday to train and stayed north to race on Monday in the Bryan Groenevelt Memorial Invitational at Crystal Mountain. The race honors Bryan Groenevelt who tragically died while ski racing at Crystal Mountain several years ago and is hosted by Benzie Central High School. "Our guys really worked hard in extremely tough conditions at this race. Any time you have sugar snow and rock solid ice it is challenging and overall we did pretty well. We took 5th and were only 2 points away from being 4th in a very talented field of teams and any time you end up at the middle or higher in this group you are skiing well. We learned a lot that is going to help us when we start our conference racing in the very near future. Our seniors led the way at the race, Tyler Dean earned a 7th place medal in slalom (16th GS) while fellow senior Luke Shuster earned his first Invitational medal with a 14th place in slalom and Sean Rice scored 28th in GS. Rounding our the scoring was DJ Potgeter (23rd SL & 24th GS), Brayden Smith (22nd GS)and Cohen Broomfield (29th SL), who scored his first varsity points at this race. Caledonia's next race will be Monday January 30th at Timber Ridge Ski Area. Team Standings Onekama 95.5 Mt.
