Belmont, MI — Tuesday was a beautiful springlike day, one that would have been perfect for a baseball game or track meet but it was also Valentines day and the MHSAA Region 5 Ski Meet at Cannonsburg. East Grand Rapids did a great job hosting the race and an even better job keeping the slope conditions as good as possible in the 55 degree temperature. "Everyone at the meet was pleasantly surprised how well the snow held up for the race. I did not have one course report of a rut or hole developing and our kids skied really well. We had trained hard every chance we had this season and my skiers were ready. We skied our hearts out but were just not fast enough to move up beyond 6th place in the pack of 13 teams"Coach Petrosky. "We had a lot of bright spots in the race, including taking 4th in GS. Our guys really like GS and excel at it even though 90% of our training this year has been slalom. The course sets really matched the training that we had the previous day and the guys nailed down great runs. Sean Rice lead us in GS with a 14th place finish, which places him on the All Regional Team for GS. Tyler Dean (22nd), Brayden Smith (30.5) and Luke Shuster (33rd) also scored in GS." The Scots placed 8th in slalom. Scoring in the event were Tyler Dean (21.5 th), Sean Rice (29th), DJ Potgeter (30th) and Brayden Smith (35th). "Slalom at Cannonsburg is tough due to the flat area from the start to the headwall. The teams that race here all the time have a big advantage but our guys really pushed hard and skied it well at this race." The Scots still have two more races this season, the final SWMSC race on Wednesday February 22nd at Bittersweet and the first annual Caledonia Invitational at Crystal Mountain on February 24th. The Caledonia Invitational will be a six team invitational with JV teams. Attending will be Benzie Central, Caledonia, Grand Rapids Christian, Maple City Glenn Lake, Onekama and Plainwell TK. It will a great way to finish up the season.
