Holden, MA — The Wachusett Regional High School boys' varsity basketball team cruised to a 64-41 victory over Fitchburg High on January 28, 2025, showcasing a well-rounded team effort and dominant individual performances. Will Njoroge was the star of the game, leading the team with 23 points, including an outstanding 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. His incredible 3-point shooting was the biggest factor in establishing a commanding lead early on, helping Wachusett outscore Fitchburg 18-4 in the first quarter. Njoroge’s scoring, combined with his overall offensive presence, proved to be too much for Fitchburg to handle throughout the game. Seann Katubi was another key contributor, adding 17 points and dishing out 7 assists, while also contributing 4 steals. His all-around play provided the necessary support to keep the offense flowing smoothly. Erik Maziarz was also solid, scoring 15 points and playing a crucial role in the paint, where Wachusett outscored Fitchburg 32-24. Maziarz’s ability to stretch the defense inside gave the team additional opportunities. Wachusett shot 47.3% from the field, significantly better than Fitchburg’s 35.3%, and they continued to find success from the free-throw line, hitting 9 of 11 attempts (82%). Fitchburg, however, struggled with free throws, shooting just 33.3% (1-of-3). While Wachusett shot 31% from 3-point range, it was Njoroge’s exceptional shooting that set the team apart. His performance from beyond the arc helped keep Fitchburg at bay, while the team also controlled the boards, grabbing 23 defensive rebounds to Fitchburg’s 20, which allowed for more second-chance opportunities. Fitchburg had difficulty finding consistent scoring, especially from the 3-point line, shooting just 13% (2-of-15). Wachusett's defense was stifling, forcing Fitchburg into tough shots and limiting their scoring opportunities. Wachusett finished with 16 assists and 10 steals, showcasing their overall dominance in all aspects of the game. The final score of 64-41 was a testament to Wachusett's superior shooting, teamwork, and defense, with Will Njoroge’s stellar 3-point shooting being the standout performance of the night.
