Oceanside, CA — Lancer Boys Golf Tryouts – Spring 2025
Welcome to the Lancer Boys Golf 2025 season! We are looking forward to another successful season this year, both at the Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV) level. Our Varsity team won our League tournament title last year, we were League co-champions with Torrey Pines HS, and we finished Top 5 in the very competitive CIF San Diego Section tournament. Our JV squad also had another strong season, and repeated as champions at the season ending Emerald Isle JV Shootout. Overall, our program goal at the Varsity level is to win the CIF Section tournament, be competitive at the Regional and State level, and help develop competitive golfers to compete in College, if that is their goal.
Regarding tryouts, we look for young men to show up who have had either competitive Junior Golf experience, or who have played golf regularly over the past several years as their primary sport. Parents please note – this is not a program for “beginning” or “novice” golfers.
In years past, we have kept between 16 and 20 players on the roster, depending on skill level and the year in school. This number is not set in stone, but we are limited by golf course access for practice and matches. We anticipate having 11 Lancers back from the 2024 team, so there are a few spots available that we will look to fill during our tryouts.
Finally, anyone who is looking to tryout MUST be cleared in advance by the Athletic Department. Please complete the steps necessary to be cleared before Saturday, February 15, 2025. If your son has not been cleared by the Athletic Department, they will not be allowed to try out. There are no exceptions to this.
Here are the details for tryouts:
Saturday, February 15 - Day 1:
At Goat Hill Park golf course in Oceanside, CA www.goathillpark.com
Check in / Arrive no later than: 11:00 am
First tee time: 1:00 pm
Step 1: Driving Range evaluation by the Coaches. Range balls will be supplied, and the coaches will watch and evaluate the skill level of each Lancer that checks in. Following this initial evaluation on the driving range, there may be some initial cuts, depending on the number of Lancers that show up, and the skill level/golf ability showed on the range.
Step 2: If your Son makes it past Step 1, he will play on the Golf Course. Coaches will determine the groups/pairings, and your Son will play a minimum of 9 holes, keeping accurate score. The Varsity players will play from the “Black” tee markers, while the JV will play from the “White” tee markers. The coaches will determine which tee your Son plays from for tryouts. Depending on skill and ability shown, we may have another cut after 9 holes. The remaining boys will play the rest of the round, daylight permitting.
Notes:
Range balls and the greens fees will be paid for.
All Lancers will walk the golf course, unless a prior medical exemption has been provided through the athletic department.
Lancers trying out must have their own golf equipment, including clubs, golf bag, golf balls golf gloves and golf shoes; and must be wearing proper golf course attire (no jeans, no t-shirts)
Lancers must bring their own snacks and hydration. These are also available to purchase at the course.
Parents are NOT allowed on the golf course, unless prior medical exemption has been provided through the Athletic Department. However, parents can watch behind the 1st tee, behind the 9th green, at the 10th tee, and by the clubhouse adjacent to the 18th green. There should be no communication with or coaching of your with your Son at any time during tryouts.
We ask that cellphones remain turned off and kept in the golf bag at all times, unless there is a medical emergency.
After Day 1, the coaches will evaluate the scores/results, and it is probable more cuts will be made. Not everyone that played 18 holes on Day 1 is guaranteed of advancing to Day 2.
Monday, February 17 - Day 2:
At The Crossings golf course in Carlsbad https://thecrossingsatcarlsbad.com/
Check in / Arrive no later than: 1:00 pm
First tee time: 2:50 pm
Tryouts will be 9 holes, on the Front 9 of The Crossings.
Same “Notes” as above on Day 1 apply for Day 2.
After Day 2 of tryouts, we will plan on making the final cuts to establish the 2025 Lancer Boys Golf team.
We are excited about another season of Lancer Boys Golf! This year we will be asking everyone who makes the team for a $195.00 Team Uniform donation to help offset the cost for the gear the boys will be supplied and will be wearing all season. More details will be given on this at the first team meeting, after tryouts are complete.
