Today the Goddard Lions raced in postseason competition in the AVCTL Division 2 League Meet. The race conditions were perfect as the Kansas Veterans Home Course in Winfield, Kansas provided the Lions with an excellent stage to run new personal records and season bests. Today’s weather was every runners’ dream as it was cool with a slight drizzle. This meet brought together all of the teams in the AVCTL. Specifically, the Lions were concerned with the following schools in Division 2: Andover, Andover Central, Arkansas City, Eisenhower, Newton, and Salina Central.

Highlights:
1. 100% of our team (26/26) ran a new personal record or season best!
2. 96% of our team (25/26) ran a new personal record today!
3. The Lions saw Levi Brownell earn 2nd Team All-League Honors with a 13th place finish in AVCTL Division 2!
With the highlights listed above this was a day of racing that truly left me without words. How do you possibly capture such a defining race for our Cross-Country program moving forward in words? To capture today’s race, I want to use some of the words from our runners. At the beginning of our season we did an activity where every runner answered the following question: “Why do you run Cross Country?”
Here were some of their responses:
1. I run to prove to myself that I can achieve difficult things.
2. To push myself.
3. I’m determined to do better.
4. I run to have something to look back on and be proud of.
For the coaches our dream is have every runner run their best race of the season at the end and for close to all of our runners (excluding regional runners) this was the case! Lions we hope you all have something to look back on today and be proud of. The message was simple this week, “Finish the season on a high note!” Our runners who will not be moving forward to Regionals did finish their season on a high note and parents I hope you see all the improvement they have made this season!
Lions you have been working so HARD all season and today was a glimpse at the possibilities our team has moving forward into next season. We are young! Let today be a defining moment as our team moves forward towards more excellence in the future!
Levi Brownell earned 2nd Team All AVCTL League Honors with a 13th place finish in Division 2 running a new personal record of 17:17! Levi has been the leader of our Cross-Country team this season. Every day he comes to practice he always gives 110%, goes above and beyond what is required, and is an excellent role model for our underclassmen. This season he has taken on a lot pressure as our lead runner looking to pave his own way and continue the excellence displayed by our past graduated seniors. Levi has taken all that pressure, let it fuel him, and today he ran his heart and soul out to earn this honor. Levi will look to carry today’s momentum into Regionals next weekend and chase a State Qualifying Top 15 finish.
Next weekend, on Saturday, the Lions Travel to Great Bend to race in Regionals! Varsity runners go to Great Bend with aspirations of qualifying for the State Cross Country meet at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, KS.
Season Wrap Up: If you are not going to Regionals next weekend you will not need to report to Cross Country Practice next week. Uniforms/sweats may be returned at any time to Coach Andrews during school. Banquet info/dates to come in the future.
GO LIONS!
