Tucson, AZ — Catalina Foothills stormed through the field at the TUSD Volleyball Invitational this weekend, going a perfect 6-0 to claim the championship at Tucson High School.
In the title match, the Falcons squared off against Tanque Verde, who battled their way back into contention by knocking off Rincon/University in the elimination bracket earlier Saturday.
The Falcons set the tone early. Powered by Alivia Sutton’s six kills, along with Zoe Brown and Melanie Strunk’s combined 14 assists, Catalina Foothills rolled to a 25-17 win in the first set after racing out to a commanding 13-3 lead. The Hawks fought back in the second, pulling within three at 19-16, but the Falcons closed the door with a 25-18 finish to seal the match in straight sets.
Tanque Verde was led by Lauren Strada’s eight assists and Delaney Mikkelson’s five kills in the hard-fought final.
With the win, Catalina Foothills improves to 6-1 on the season, rebounding in dominant fashion after an opening loss to 4A power Mica Mountain (2-0). The Falcons now turn their focus to hosting Notre Dame Prep on Thursday, while Tanque Verde will regroup and prepare for their Sept. 8 home match against Sahuaro.
