Fairfield, CT — Shelton High School Wrestling faced three Top 15 teams Friday at Fairfield Warde. The Gaels battled tough but finished the day 0-3 and dropped to 16-6 on the season. The Gaels opened against #5 Warde, falling 48-24. The matches were highly competitive and picking up wins for Shelton were Gabe Salsamendi, Sam Carreno, Jeremy Wojtowicz, and Chase Galke. In a highly spirited battle, Shelton narrowly fell to #15 Notre Dame West Haven, 38-37. Trailing 29-25, it appeared Ralph Franco secured a pin at 175 lbs, but the fall was not called and he dropped a 6-4 decision. Following the match, a spectator was ejected and Shelton was assessed a team point deduction becausebof it. But Tony Nerrette and Chase Galke delivered clutch pins to put the Gaels ahead 37-32 heading into the final bout at 106 lbs, where NDWH secured a pin in the final match to seal the win. Also earning victories vs. NDWH were Noriel Gonzalez, Ike Blomberg (technical fall), and pins from Sammy Markaj, Jaggar DeBenedet, and Sam Carreno. In the final matchup of the day, Shelton battled #4 Trumbull before falling 45-33. Victories came from Kaleb Whyte, Ike Blomberg, and Sam Carreno (all pins), Noriel Gonzalez (major decision), Gabe Salsamendi (technical fall), and Chase Galke, who remained undefeated at heavyweight at 32-0 with another pin. The Gaels travel to New Haven on Tuesday for the regular season finale, looking to lock up an SCC division title. Roll Gaels.
