Dear Parents and Guardians, In our continuous effort to ensure that all of our Fowlerville student-athletes feel safe, respected, and empowered, all high school student-athletes (Grades 9-12) will be expected to attend a Harassment Prevention and Bystander Intervention training presented by the LACASA Center. Trainings will take place on Monday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the Alverson Performing Arts Center and will last approximately one hour. Coaches of fall sport athletes will let their team know which date they should attend. Winter/Spring student-athletes can select whichever session best meets their schedule. If a student-athlete is unable to attend they should stop and see Mr. Finney, the Athletic Director. This presentation is designed specifically to help student-athletes understand the important role they play in creating a positive, respectful, and supportive team culture. Topics will include: • How athletes can lead and promote a culture of respect • What hazing and harassment can look like • How and when to report harassment • Why bystander intervention matters • How team culture is shaped by what a team accepts and allows We believe athletics provides an important opportunity to develop not only skills and teamwork, but also leadership, accountability, and respect for others. This training is intended to give our student-athletes practical information and tools to recognize inappropriate behavior, respond appropriately, support their peers, and contribute to a culture in which every student feels safe and valued. We also recognize that parents and guardians may wish to learn more about the content that will be shared with students. Any parent or guardian who would like to view the presentation in advance is welcome to do so by scheduling an appointment with Athletic Director Jeff Finney at 517.223.6070. Parents also have the option to opt their student-athlete out of the training, however, they will still be held accountable to the student code of conduct and athletic handbook, along with Board policy. Thank you for your partnership in helping us create a safe, respectful, and positive experience for all of our student-athletes. Sincerely, Fowlerville High School Athletic Department
