Memphis Twilight Post-Race
Memphis, TN — The Carterville Lions continued their season on Saturday, September 5th, traveling to Memphis Tennessee for the famed Memphis Twilight. Competing in temperatures well over 90 degrees, both the boys and girls' teams excelled against teams from Tennessee, Illinois, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, and as far away as South Dakota, despite being one of the smallest schools in the field.
The meet kicked off with the JV girl's race (shortened to 2 miles due to extreme heat). Masi Harris and Mackenzie Reames ran in lock-step the entire race, increasing their pace from previous races.
The JV boys followed, placing 10th out of 24 teams in the adjusted 2-mile race. Vincent Lin, Mitchell Carsrud, Owen Mason, Ashby Stottler, and Preston Davis all broke the 13 minute barrier, while Adam Williams lowered his 2-mile best by over a minute.
The varsity races began with the girls 5k, in which Lane Sambursky recorded a top 40 finish in the 345-person field, Lyla Seaman a top 75 finish, while Claire Samples, Liesel Balmforth, Landry Crain, and Alissa Ruiz finished within 40 seconds of each other to take home a 14th place finish out of 44 teams.
The meet concluded as the varsity boys raced through the dark, in which Alex DeRuntz finished in the top 45 (8th among underclassmen), supported by Reece Scott, Ethan Swartz (top 15 among freshmen), Nick Wilhelm, Jack Roberston, Mason Webb, Jake Wilhelm, and Nicolas Hyson (top 20 freshman). A sprint finish under the lights of Mike Rose Stadium resulted in a 13th place finish out of 56 teams.
