Eagan, MN — #7 seeded Burnsville lost to #2 seeded Eagan on a gorgeous Memorial Day afternoon at Eagan High School by a score of 8-1. The score doesn't indicate how close this game was, and with a few calls or breaks that had gone another way, this could've been a much different ballgame. Cole Voss started on the hill for the Blaze, while Eagan countered with their ace Liam Martin, a junior who has committed to D1 Cal-Santa Barbara. Martin had his curve ball going and mixed in an above average fastball to rack up 11 strikeouts. The Blaze did scatter 5 hits off Martin, but only drew 1 walk. The hardest hit ball came in the first inning as junior Jonah Dawson cranked one to deep left center that hit the top right corner of the "green monster" for a double. A few feet to the right and that would've been a home run, and would've set a different tone to this game. Unfortunately Dawson was stranded at second. After setting down the Wildcats in order in the 1st, Voss allowed an unearned run in the 2nd, as a leadoff error came around to score. The 3rd inning was the inning that could very well be looked at as the turning point of this game. A leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a single put runners on the corners for Eagan. The runner at first attempted a steal of 2nd and the batter swung a leaned over the plate to interfere with catcher Jackson Kieffer's throw to 2nd. An appeal by Coach Scholl to call interference on the batter was denied, despite the evidence otherwise. The correct call would've led to the batter and the runner stealing to be called out, and would've ended the inning. Instead, on the very next pitch, the batter hit a triple to score the 2 runs for Eagan. Eagan added 2 more runs in the 4th off Voss, and then 3 runs off of sophomore reliever Nicholas Meuser in the 5th. Owen Geegan and Blake Schmeling pitched beautifully in relief, both setting down the side in order in the 5th and 6th. The Blaze scored their lone run in the 5th, as Ben Meuser led off with a sharp single up the middle, followed by another single to right by Kade Bowar. Meuser stole 3rd and then scored on an RBI groundout by Sean Emerson. The Blaze were led on offense by 6 guys with one hit apiece: Ben Meuser, Bowar, Dawson, Lucas Trussell, Emerson and Ethan Voss. Dawson and Voss had doubles. The Blaze will travel to play #6 seed Hastings on Wed at 4:30 in the losers bracket. The winner of that game will play again on Friday.
