Chino Hills, CA — It was a pretty special Thursday for the Ayala baseball program. The Bulldogs got a walk-off, 3-2 win over Beckman in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs, and Cole Koniarsky broke the school’s career hits record and scored the game-winning run. With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning and with one out, Ryan Moreno’s sac fly scored Koniarsky with the game winner. Koniarsky went 4-for-4, with two runs and two RBIs. Koniarsky now has 138 career hits, which broke the old record set by Kyle Velasquez just a couple years back. And keep in mind, Koniarsky’s junior year consisted of just 11 games before COVID-19 shut the world down. Lucas Welch went the first five innings for Beckman and allowed two runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out seven. AJ Roettger got the loss after allowing one run on one hit and two walks. Jacob Badawi doubled off the wall on the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a Koniarsky single. Aside from the game-winning sac fly, Ryan Moreno also singled once. Troy McCain walked and singled, and Luke Solis collected one base hit in the win. Thomas Cerecedes had a really solid outing, but wasn’t in on the decision. Cerecedes went the first 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out one. Trent Merrill and AJ Juarez got one out each to get the Bulldogs out of the top of the seventh inning.
