Agoura, CA — If it wasn't yet homecoming night, the Agoura High football team thrived in its first home game of the 2021 season. Ty Dieffenbach threw four touchdown passes and Jake East caught three scoring passes and notched an interception as Agoura rolled to a 34-21 victory over visiting Ventura on Friday night. "Atmosphere was amazing," said Agoura coach Dustin Croick. "Stands were packed and our student section was awesome the whole night. It was a very fun night." Agoura moves to 2-0 on the season. Jackson Meehan rushed for one touchdown and Aiden Della Ripa caught a scoring pass as the Chargers pulled away for the victory. "We started slow and made some mistakes early but we did a great job bouncing back and finished strong," said Croick. Ventura quarterback Joey Reynoso ran for a score and hit Giacomo Sherman with a TD pass. Noah McGee also had a touchdown for the Cougars (0-1), who played with just four seniors due to COVID-19 protocols. Ventura was forced to cancel its season opener against Simi Valley last week due to a COVID outbreak. “The biggest heartbreak was moving forward knowing you’re without all your guys,” Ventura coach Tim Garcia said. “That’s one of the harder things I think. You understand what everybody puts in.” Garcia declined to share the number of players the Cougars were without, citing directions from the district. The Ventura Unified School District COVID dashboard reported 14 positive cases at Ventura High last week. "We played with some freshman," Garcia said. "We played with some sophomores. We played with some juniors." The Cougars return to full strength this week, following the elapsed 10-day quarantine period. "Everybody’s back now," Garcia said.
