San Juan Capistrano, CA — JV Lady Lions got their overall record into the positive (now 8-7 overall, 3-1 in Trinity League) with a resounding win over visiting Mater Dei this afternoon. Down 2-4 after the 1st round, the girls turned it around with a strong 2nd round, going into the 3rd with a narrow 7-5 lead. A pleasant surprise, we took all 6 sets in the last round. Apparently a few of the Monarchs had to leave for MUN; and according to Coach Sydney, they have another JV team with a handful of seniors on it…we’ll have to be on our toes for the rematch later this month. With a balanced attack, JSerra won 7 sets of singles and 6 sets of doubles. Each doubles team won 2 of 3 sets played. Ava Hetland and Fionnuala McClain played well, teaming up for the first time this season. Katherine Dygean and Sofia Recupero came within a tie-breaker of winning all 3. Olivia Nowlan and Erica Gonzalez came from behind (1-3) to defeat Mater Dei’s #2 team in the final set of the day and the only win vs this team, great effort - NEGU! Our singles line-up consisted of 3 freshmen: Alma Bayat, Cecilia Nama, Sophia Staff. Alma was asked to tire out their top player in round #1, which she did; and then went on to win her next 2 sets easily: 6-0, 6-1. After a tough first set, Cecilia moved up to the top court and dispatched MD’s top player: 6-1 and followed with another ez win vs their #3 player for a total of 2 set wins today - well done. MVP honors today to Sophia Staff, the only Lion to win all 3 sets today: 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. This is the 2nd league match in a row, in which she was 3 for 3 and the only singles player to finish with a perfect “trifecta”! Next up: Tuesday, Oct. 12th, home vs Santa Margarita, 3pm.
