Ventura, CA — Paraclete had history on its side. One state championship and multiple section titles adorn the football program's trophy case. "We knew that they had a lot of individual talent," said Buena quarterback Zane Carter. "That is not an issue with us." Buena stood toe-to-toe against a program that had won 52 playoff games and seven section titles over the last 25 years and came out on top. Carter scored three times and threw one TD pass as No. 2 seed Buena defeated Paraclete 31-13 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 8 first-round game Friday at home for its sixth straight victory. Buena (8-3) will be at Placentia-El Dorado this Friday in its first quarterfinal appearance since 2013. 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈 "We were not intimidated," said Buena coach Ryan Bolland. Certainly not from the second play of the game and onward. Carter connected with Colin Guenther for a 62-yard completion to the Paraclete 25. Two plays later, Carter scored on a 4-yard keeper for a 7-0 lead just 2:16 into the game. Buena was without the services of one of the county's top running backs in Jake Murphy (1,354 yards and 16 TDs). In his place, Camden Walker rushed for 67 yards and might have come close to doubling that total if a run wasn't nullified by offsetting penalties. "He hasn't had a lot of reps at that position," said Bolland. "We told him to just give us what you can. The biggest thing was that he took care of that ball." Indeed. In its biggest game of the year, Buena did not have a turnover. "It made made us a little nervous because the running game is the strongest part of our offense," said Carter. Along with Buena's talent on the offensive line, Carter has been a huge reason for success on that side of the ball. "Zane does things that others can't do," said Bolland. "It's one thing when you see him on film and another when you see what he does against you." Carter completed 10 of 14 passes for 247 yards and rushed for 40 yards, including TD runs of 4, 7 and 6 yards. His 8-yard TD pass to Brandon Rice gave Buena a 14-7 halftime lead. Paraclete fought to keep up with Buena. It was stopped on fourth down at the Buena 26 with 15 seconds left in the first quarter, tied the game with a 12-play, 65-yard drive early in the second quarter and came up short inside the Buena 10 on the last play of the half. Until surrendering a meaningless TD in the closing minutes, the Buena defense dominated the second half. Paraclete (4-7) had only 69 yards on its first four possessions. "With the talent they had on the edges," said Bolland, "we had to have good cornerback play from Ty (Morris) and Colin (Guenther). To hold them to seven points until the last moments of the fourth quarter is phenomenal." Buena has won eight of its last nine games. Two of its three losses were by one point. "This has been a big season for our program," said Bolland. "No matter how good you are, any win in the playoffs is really good." Great Job!! 🏈🏈🏈
