Niceville, FL — Rankings will always be subjective. There's simply no way around it. Sure, there's the stat sheet and the win-loss column to consult with, along with head-to-head results and transitive property. There's also the almighty eye test, which sometimes trumps a fluke outcome. With that said, the initial Daily News girls soccer rankings — based on the first two weeks of the season — are mine and mine alone. They'll be released every Monday online and in Tuesday's print, and they'll be used as a way to recap the week prior and shed light on any developing narratives or emerging players. Agree or disagree? I'm open to debate. What's not up for debate is the No. 1 spot in our Top Five, which belongs to ... 1. Niceville (5-0) This is not your Eagles of yesteryear. Gone is Player of the Year Ashlyn Fernandez, the defensive-minded star graduating to join her sisters at Tulsa. Gone is Michael Denton, the face of the program for the past 19 years. But five games in under Kelly Fernandez, you'd hardly recognize the losses from last year's 16-1-1 Sweet 16 qualifier. To wit: The Eagles have outscored foes 24-1 with four shutouts, including a 1-0 victory over rival Navarre last Wednesday. The beautiful thing about the roster is the abundance of depth, speed and acumen allows for Fernandez to play with the lineup configurations. Take Marie Reid and Taylor Klosterman. Both can play forward or drop into the center back slot like Ashlyn did during her Eagles tenure. Marie Reid moves the ball away from Daysha Taylor as Niceville hosted rival Navarre in a girls soccer match. Flip-flopping between the roles, Klosterman finds feet, can work the ball through the middle of the field and is more composed in the back. Reid has more of the breakaway potential and is learning to see the field better, where to place balls over the top and where attacks should begin and end. The mirroring of positions allows them to see the attack from both vantage points. "They both feel comfortable at each position so we're going to continue to rotate," Fernandez said. Natalie Denton is also a utility player that can play up top or on the back line. "Whatever she's asked to do," said Fernandez, "she makes it happen." Meanwhile Sophie Edwards is a "hidden gem" with great ball control and an awareness to be in the right spot. Fernandez is just looking for that "bear" mentality to come out in her. On the radar is freshman Bailey Howell, who suffered a broken leg in the offseason but should be ready after Christmas break, and keeper Bella Morey, "who wants to prove she's college material." Niceville returns to action with back-to-back home tilts vs. West Florida on Nov. 30 and Mosley on Dec. 1.
