San Juan Capistrano, CA — January 14, 2022 - The Girls Water Polo Team improved to 11-2 overall on Thursday night, defeating the Yorba Linda Mustangs 9-4 in non-league competition. The Lions were playing with their emotions high as it was not only the teams Lion Game for the year (each program has one Lion Game per year where the student body shows out to support), but it was Senior night. This year, the Water Polo team honored their lone senior, Isabella Melgoza. It was clear from the start that the team was playing for Melgoza, with stifling defense, and excellent team offense. Micaela Martz had a great day in the cage for the Lions, posting a shutout in the 1st quarter and allowing just four goals overall. Sydney Chapman was all over the pool for the Lions, this according to Head Coach Natalie Seidemann. "Sydney was great on defense tonight, and offensively she made great decisions, got her teammates involved and helped get us on the scoreboard," Seidemann said. As for Melgoza, Seidemann had nothing but gratitude for her four years of dedication to the program. "Isabella has been a blast to coach these past three years, she is a great teammate, leader and friend and she has been instrumental in building our teams culture and helping us set a standard of what it means to be a part of the JSerra Girls Water Polo program." The Lions now have a few days off as they prepare to travel Rosary High School next Thursday, January 20th to take on the Royals.
