Washington, DC — The Bowie State softball team suffered a pair of losses against Division I Howard Wednesday afternoon, falling 12-0 in the first game and 9-1 in the second, both in five innings. The losses dip the Bowie State's record to 4-4-1 overall while HU improves to 5-9 on the year. The Bulldogs trailed the Bison's 7-0 after two innings before HU tacked on four more in the bottom of the third in route to the 12-0 win. Bowie State tallied just one hit in the opening game which came from freshman Saniya Jones (Louisa, VA) at the top of the fifth. Freshman Karen Fritzges (Baltimore, MD) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out one in two innings of work. The second game was highlighted by freshman Breanna Harvey's homerun in the top of the second. The homer was her first on the season as the Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard, trailing 4-1 after two complete innings. From there, BSU's offense spiraled as the Bison's added two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth for the five-run rule and 9-1 win. Offensively, the Bulldogs had increased their total hits in the night cap – registering six hits total led by Harvey and freshman Brittany Brewer (Savage, MD) who both went 2-for-2 at the plate. Graduate senior Evelyn Buehlman (Ellicott City, MD) suffered the loss, giving up six runs in the contest on nine hits and one walk. Bowie State will return to action Saturday, Mar. 5 for an action packed weekend, beginning Saturday, Mar. 5 against Bloomsburg and Mansfield. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m. at the BSU softball field.
