Gypsum, CO — Devils Sink Steamboat by Sophie Weisberger The Devils have gained yet another victory this season, this time against Steamboat, and remain undefeated in their conference! Players were both excited and nervous about this homecoming game. Both the Devil libero, Natalie Izbicki, and starting middle, Christi San Diego were limited by illnesses. However, this gave other players the opportunity to step up and execute! In the end, the Eagle Valley system remained strong, not shaken. Their focus started scattered in the first set, contributing to the 23-25 loss. The players were locked in for the second set and dominated, winning 25-12, as CJ Yucak set up Talia Crawford, Aspen Misch, Ione Pedersen, Ava Geiman, and Taylor Hooper for kills. Coach Garvey commented, "The major turning point was when we stopped tipping and started swinging in our attacks. Before, we were afraid to make mistakes. When we started being aggressive, our offense exploded." With this switch came amazing kills, explosive blocks, and tremendous digs. From then on, Eagle Valley was able to sail to victory, winning three sets in a row. The Devils set their course and started scoring. Eagle Valley knocked Steamboat off balance by limiting their attack options. The Devils improved their game by neutralizing their opponent's strong defense. By the fourth set, the Devils seemed to be on a clear path to victory. However, this win would not come as easily as they anticipated. The score remained tight from the start and ended with Eagle Valley pulling ahead to win 25-20. At first, the Devils struggled to cover Steamboat's tips and short balls. Halfway through the match, Eagle Valley adjusted and improved coverage, cheered on by family, friends, and the Bleacher Creatures. The Devils' 3-1 victory after a battle against the Sailors made for a volleyball night to remember!
