Ventura, CA — As he is every week before kickoff, Zane Carter was asked just how far he felt comfortable kicking from Friday night. “All of them,” the 6-foot-3 Buena High senior responded as the stadium filled around him, “I’m making them all.” Hours later, after driving his offense 36 yards in 39 seconds in the final minute, Carter made good on that promise as time expired. Carter blasted a 43-yard field goal on the final play to lift Buena to a dramatic 10-7 win over visiting Ventura in the schools’ annual crosstown rivalry clash. The home sideline and home stands spilled on the field to celebrate the Bulldogs’ second straight win in the rivalry, which kept Buena (5-3) in second place in the Channel League at 5-1 and all but clinched a playoff spot. “This is what dreams are made of,” Buena senior Colin Guenther said after the Bulldogs lifted the Suzanne Brown Memorial Trophy. “There’s so many hours spent training for this moment. …This is the best night of my life.”
