Oxnard, CA — Electricity has brought life into the Pacifica High football team. Just when the Tritons needed it the most. On three consecutive touches spanning three possessions, Josh Joyner had 162 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns as Pacifica defeated visiting Buena 35-7 on Homecoming Night in the regular-season finale Friday. With the victory, Pacifica (8-2, 7-1) shares the Channel League title with Rio Mesa and Santa Barbara. Buena (5-5, 5-3), which was without 2021 county offensive player of the year Zane Carter, finished fourth in the Channel to earn the league's final automatic berth into the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. It is the third consecutive league title and fourth in the last seven years for Pacifica, which had not won one in the program's first 14 years. "When you're not an old program, you're making history," said Pacifica coach Mike Moon. "I tell our kids that you are not building on someone else's tradition, you are the tradition." After averaging 48.8 points in a five-game winning streak, Pacifica seemingly lost its mojo, scoring 31 total points in its last two. In rapid succession, Joyner scored on a 45-yard run, returned a punt 58 yards for a second touchdown and added a 59-yard run on the first play of Pacifica's next offensive possession. He finished the game with 213 all-purpose yards. Joyner was lightning in a bottle last season with 339 yards and four touchdowns on punt returns. Opportunities to return punts have not come Joyner's way as teams have wisely punted away from him. And frustration as a punt returner has carried over to practices. "I have been dropping the ball," said Joyner. "I have worked on it so that coaches can trust me." Opponents should have the confidence in their decision to make sure punts are not directed his way. Joyner's 48-yard TD run with 7:25 left in the first quarter gave Pacifica a 7-0 lead. Seventy seconds later, the junior exploded past defenders for a TD on a punt return. Starting in place of Tagg Harrison at quarterback, Dominic Duran completed three passes in a 55-yard drive on Pacifica's first possession of the second quarter. Philip Kim's 2-yard TD run gave Pacifica a 21-0 margin. Duran made it 28-0 with an 8-yard TD pass to Savion Taylor with 2:48 left in the half. "Our offense had a middle-of-the-year lull," said Moon. "We had a lot of dropped passes, which we saw that again tonight. We have got to get better than that. "At times the offensive line struggled, then the next play there was a wide-open play." The task of replacing Carter, who had passed for 1,122 yards and rushed for 409, fell to Ty Weeks, who had attempted just six passes all season. Like Carter, Weeks made good use of favorite target Colin Guenther, who caught six passes for 62 yards and had a 53-yard punt return. Guenther is the program's career receiving yards record holder. Buena scored with 3:26 left in the game on a 3-yard run by Camden Walker. "With them not having Zane Carter," said Moon, "it made a bigger difference for Buena. He is a special player. When we saw him on the sidelines in street clothes, we felt that this would be a different game." Unless there is some major movement on the computer rankings, Pacifica will likely find itself in Division 4 and facing a first-round playoff game on the road, said Moon. The CIF-SS releases the playoff pairings Sunday. Buena, which reached the Division 8 final last season, could be placed in Division 8 again.
