Goleta, CA — One week after claiming victory via a game-winning field goal, the Dos Pueblos High School football team took care of business from the jump this Friday, routing Nordhoff High 41-7 in the Chargers' home opener at Scott O’Leary Stadium in front of a packed crowd. With the win, Dos Pueblos improves to 2-0 on the season, already matching their win total from last season, while Nordhoff falls to 0-2. “Confidence. This bring us confidence,” head coach AJ Pateras told Noozhawk after the game. “We are building momentum to a quick league turnaround, and having confidence is the biggest thing right now. We went 2-8 last season, so it’s just about trying to get these kids an identity of what winning feels like and the standard of what it takes to win every single week.” Senior running back David Buso led the way offensively, scoring three touchdowns in the first half while racking up more than 20 rushing yards. “We just ate them up on the line. We just blocked, did our job and it's all them. All the credit goes to them, I wouldn't be in the end zone if it wasn't without,” Buso said. “But, today was amazing. We got to build off this and hopefully go into next week versus Buena.” Though Pateras was happy with the running game, he was also excited about his team’s passing offense. Junior quarterback Ryan Marsh tossed for 98 yards and two touchdowns on seven completions from 13 attempts. His best pass came in the third quarter, when he connected with senior Cairo Rios on a 10-yard out route near the sideline. Rios then broke multiple tackles on his way to a 40-yard touchdown, the Chargers' last of the game, giving them a 41-0 lead with 7:12 left in the third quarter. “Traditionally, we have been a run school, but to be successful in today's football game you have to throw and so we're trying to continue to build balance,” Pateras said. “David (Buso) did a great job today and didn't play much defense, and that was by design. "We have other guys that we need to get better for league so being able to run the ball effectively the last two weeks is really important and being able to capitalize in the pass game was good.” Defensively, the Chargers were also stout, recording seven interceptions as a team, including four in the first quarter. Junior safety Matt Welch had three interceptions for the Chargers on Friday night, including one that was returned for a touchdown in the third quarter, though it was negated by a holding penalty. Senior Immanuel Trujillo had two interceptions of his own, while senior Dylan Orguiola and senior Ryan Orozco each had one of their own. “Last week at times, we just didn't get hats to the ball. This week we made an emphasis in practice to tackle more, get body to body, and tonight it showed,” Pateras said. “I am proud of the effort and I'm proud that we got every kid in the game on top of that because I think sometimes we forget the scout team guys are just as hard working and put in the same hours.” Dos Pubelos converted three of those first four interceptions into touchdowns in the first quarter, giving the team a 21-0 advantage through the first 12 minutes. Buso scored two rushing touchdowns while the other came from Marsh connecting with Trujillo in the endzone for a 12-yard touchdown score. In the second quarter, the Chargers racked up two more interceptions and a couple turnover on downs giving the offense the short field. Buso would score his third touchdown of the game in between two made field goals from senior Gregory Tripathi. Tripathi was 2 for 2 on field goal attempts and did not miss an extra point attempt. “Honestly I was kind of sad because defense is my main love. I love defense and to know I can go play offense and know my defense will still be there and have my back, it’s a good sight,” Buso said. “But I'm so excited going against Buena and hopefully get some revenge against them.” Dos Pueblos will host Buena of Ventura next Friday at 7 p.m.
