Goleta, CA — Everything was going right for the Dos Pueblos High School football early in its contest Friday night against Buena High, but mistakes and missed opportunities allowed the Bulldogs to run away with the contest, defeating the Chargers 35-14 at Scott O’Leary Stadium. With its first loss of the season, and its first Channel League game, Dos Pueblos falls to 2-1. The win was the first of the season for Buena, which had starting quarterback Zane Carter return to the lineup. “Our effort was great this week in practice, but it was the little things and those little things are what leads to those penalties in a game,” DP coach A.J. Pateras told Noozhawk after the game. “When we had drives going, we would get a penalty or we would miss a protection, and we just have to be better. The kids know what's expected of them. They know what they've set as their standard. We've just got to come out execute better.” One of the biggest mistakes of the game came in the second quarter, as the contest was tied 7-7 with Dos Pueblos driving. The Chargers faced a 3rd and 1 at the Buena 31 with just under 3:30 left in the half. Dos Pueblos running back David Buso picked up the first but a holding penalty negated the run and forced the Chargers to eventually punt. That allowed Buena, who trailed early, to rip off 21 straight points in the final 5:23 of the first half, taking a 21-7 lead into the break. The Bulldogs led by as much as 28 in the contest. “It's about being diligent to your craft and understanding what you're doing with your job,” Pateras said. “We have to just be more focused and have more attention to detail on our job.” Dos Pueblos also had no answer for Carter. The 6-3, 210-pound quarterback ran for 140 yards Friday night, scoring two touchdowns on the ground, and tossed another through the air while going 9-for-12 with 118 passing yards. “Carter is a really good football player. With him on the field, they look like a completely different team and we talked about the juice he was going to give them and how that first eight minutes was going to be the difference and we responded right away. But we didn't weather that storm,” Pateras said. “We didn't finish the game early and we had chances to do something.” The Chargers had multiple chances early in the contest to take a more commanding lead. On Dos Pueblos' first drive, facing a 3rd and 10, junior quarterback Ryan Marsh connected with senior wide receiver Brett Jones on the left sideline on a streak. Jones outjumped the corner, caught the pass, and ran up the sideline for a 62-yard score to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the contest. On Buena’s first possession, Carter threw a pass on third down that was tipped by a Dos Pueblos defender and then intercepted by senior Immanuel Trujillo, who returned the ball to the Buena 40-yard line. Trujillo had two intcerptions last week in the 41-7 win over Nordhoff. On the ensuing Buena possession, the Bulldogs went for it on 4th and 2, but fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Dos Pueblos. The Chargers could not capitlize on either turnover. Then, third time was the charm for Buena, who took possession at their own 11-yard line with 10:23 left to go in the quarter. Buena took five minutes to drive the length of the field and punched the ball in the endzone. The Bulldogs got the ball back with 3:09 left on the clock, which was more than enough time for Carter to rip off a 35-yard touchdown run to give Buena the 14-7 lead. Buena would get the ball back one more time, with 1:37 remaining in the half. There, Buena’s Stevie Plahn went on to break off a 63-yard run to set his team up at the six-yard line. Carter punched it in from there. Buena scored on a 43-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second half to take a 28-7 lead and took a 35-7 lead late in the fourth after a 29-yard touchdown run. As a team, Buena rushed for 344 yards on the ground on 34 carries. We didn't tackle very well. It’s something we work on each week, and we just didn't finish through, we didn't get to the ball with multiple hats and the difference between these two weeks is the caliber of our opponent one, but two, we didn't finish to the ball like we did the first two weeks,” Pateras said. Late in the fourth, Marsh connected with senior Cairo Rios for his second touchdown of the night. It was a perfect backshoulder throw on a 20-yard go-route. Marsh finished the night tossing for 202 yards and two touchdowns on 11 completions with 21 attempts. “It’s timing. Everything was there. He's got to trust his receivers to make a break and throw on the break, but the things we wanted to do we were there,” Pateras said. “Our passing game is going to be fine, it's there. We got to execute the run game a little bit better, but ultimately, it comes down to inconsistency. That was the whole night. It was just an inconsistent night and poor tackling.” Dos Pueblos will travel to face Ventura next Friday at 7 p.m. “It's going to be a knockout, drag out, tough battle. Each week, you're playing a playoff team and that's where we're headed, so we are excited about the opportunity. The kids are gonna relish that and we'll bounce back,” Pateras said. “The effort was there, we just got to execute more cleanly and give ourselves better opportunities.”
