Huntington Beach, CA — Whew! A close one! USUALLY, the winner of this 2-card pool play, goes undefeated; losing you first match doesn't bode will in final tally. The Lions dodged a bullett by refusing to give up. There were 3 matches in this category...Pictured above, Cecilia gives up no games, which is difficult in this format because one tends to let up when they are winning by such a margain. Not Cecilia! Converseley, Cordelia, on the next court was DOWN 0-7. KOach asked her if she could hold serve, break and hold again, play 1 game at a time and chip away at that [seemingly] insurmountable lead. She did this, for a 3-8 loss, but it was a big help! Ellie and Natalia were also way down at line one doubles, 2-6, but battled back, narrowly losing a tiebreaker, still garnering 7 games in our column. Adjacent to them at line #2 doubles, Neeka and Olivia dug a big hole quickly! [KOach thought he was watching a prison escape movie]! BUT, after ALSO being down 2-6, they put together an onslaught of 6 straight winning games! This win not only gave JSerra our 3rd set [tie] and obviously, the 8 games helped our tally! Kate and Sophia [who didn't even know each other, much less play together] won 8-4 at line #3 doubles. So, the sets were tied 3 - 3 and JSerra had 38 individual games vs 33 for Arroyo. Arroyo was shell shocked, they already had 2 singles set victories, were up BIG at the aforementioned doubles sets THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE of a complete team effort and why coaches stress to keep trying and never give up..every game counts! KOach loved this TOTAL team effort!
