Standish, ME — STANDISH, Maine – Angelica Hurley scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Saint Joseph's College Monks to a 58-42 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday night at the Harold Alfond Center. Facing each other for the 54th time, Saint Joseph's picked up its 13th win in the overall series and retains the Costello Cup for the seventh consecutive year. USM leads the overall series between the two schools 41-13. The Records: Southern Maine (1-3) Saint Joseph's College (4-2) Costello Cup: The Costello Cup is presented annually to the winner of the contest between the rival schools and honors the late Dr. Richard "Doc" Costello, former USM Athletic Director and long-time basketball coach for both the men's and women's programs. Tonight's win gives the Monks the cup for the seventh consecutive season, and the 11th time in the 32-game series. USM leads the series 21-11. How It Happened: Leading by a bucket 10-8 after the first quarter thanks to a balanced offensive attack, Southern Maine found itself trailing the Monks 27-16 at the break as SJC outscored USM 19-6 in the second quarter. Tied at 16 with 5:40 left in the second quarter after two free throws from junior Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Joseph's College scored 11 unanswered points to seize control. SJC continued to grow its lead in the third quarter and took a 47-25 lead in to the fourth quarter. Hannah Talon led the Monks with six third quarter points as SJC outscored USM 20-9 in the third. Southern Maine fought back in the fourth and scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to trail 47-33 after a steal and a layup from sophomore Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine). Back-to-back layups from junior Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine/Noble) made it a three possession game, 51-42 with 2:33 to play in the fourth, but the Monks closed out the game on the line for the 58-42 final. Inside The Stats: Fleming led USM with 13 points, while freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal off of the bench. Gould finished with six points and a team-high eight rebounds. USM narrowly outrebounded SJC 37-36. Both teams had 10 offensive rebounds. Gould and freshman Gabby Green (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook) each had three offensive boards. Green finished with seven total rebounds. Up Next: Southern Maine remains on the road and heads to UMaine Farmington on Wednesday (5:30 pm) in a non-conference game. The Huskies are then back in action on Wednesday, December 7 (5:30 pm) at Rhode Island College in Little East Conference action.
