Farmington, ME — FARMINGTON, Maine – Sophomore Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine) and freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) combined for 28 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, six steals and three blocked shots to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 65-49 win over the UMaine Farmington Beavers in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Dearborn Gymnasium. Playing in the 57th meeting in the all-time series between the two schools, Southern Maine now leads UMF 45-12, and has won the last 28 consecutively over the Beavers. USM last played UMaine Farmington during the 2019-2020 season and earned a 79-50 win. The Records: Southern Maine (2-3) UMaine Farmington (1-5) How It Happened: Southern Maine scored the first 16 points of the game, outscoring the Beavers 21-6 in the first quarter, and led wire-to-wire to pick up the win. Junior Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine/Noble) had six of her 11 points in the frame, while classmates Ashlee Aceto (South Portland, Maine) and Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) each had four points. Degifico scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the second quarter as the Huskies took a commanding 36-20 lead into the halftime break. Vaughan carried the scoring load in the third quarter, scoring seven of her 12 points on 2-for-2 shooting and a 3-for-4 mark from the free throw line, adding a pair of steals, as USM led 55-38 heading into the fourth. In the fourth, USM scored the first six points of the quarter as Degifico hit two free throws to start and Aceto canned back-to-back layups for its largest lead of the game 21 points, 59-38, with 7:40 to play. The Huskies stayed comfortably in front and led 65-47 with 16 second to play on a jumper from Ramsdell before UMF scored the final bucket as time expired for the 65-49 final. Vaughan had a career-best 12 points, adding seven rebounds, three assists, four steals and one blocked shots. Fleming was 5-for-16 from the field for her 11 points, adding six rebounds and five assists. Aceto and Ramsdell each had eight rebounds, while Aceto snagged a game-high nine rebounds, helping the Huskies to a 45-30 advantage on the glass. The Huskies had 15 offensive rebounds in the game led by four from Aceto, three from Degifico and three from sophomore Gabby Green (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook). UMF's Victoria Garand had 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting to lead the Beavers.
