Gorham, ME — GORHAM, Maine – Emily Collins (Vernon, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) scored 14 points to lead a balanced offense as the No. 25 Bowdoin College Polar Bears defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 76-39 in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium. Collins was one of two Polar Bears to score in double figures and was joined by Shayla Eubanks (Portland, Maine) with 11 points. Thirteen different Bowdoin players scored, and seven had at least five points. Southern Maine freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) led the Huskies with 12 points and four rebounds. Junior Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) tossed in 10 points and snagged five rebounds and two steals, while junior Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H.) added seven points, four assists. The Records: No. 25 Bowdoin (11-3) Southern Maine (4-8) Series History: Tonight's game is the 55th meeting between Southern Maine and Bowdoin College. While Southern Maine leads the overall series 33-23, Bowdoin has won the last nine games against the Huskies. Southern Maine last defeated the Polar Bears on November 27, 2012 72-58. How It Happened: The Huskies kept it close in the first quarter and trailed Bowdoin 13-11 as Vaughan scored six of her 12 to start the game. Southern Maine led 11-6 after a free throw from sophomore Gabby Green (Manchester, Maine) at the 1:49 mark but the Polar Bears turned up their offense scoring the final seven points of the quarter. Back-to-back threes from Bowdoin's Sela Kay (Los Angeles, Calif.) started an 18-0 run for the Polar Bears in the second quarter. Bowdoin went into the half up 31-11. USM's offense picked up in the third quarter as Ramsdell and Vaughan each converted traditional three-point plays but Bowdoin hit four third quarter threes and Collins scored nine of her 14 points in the third for a 58-25 lead headed to the fourth. In the fourth, Bowdoin outscored USM 18-14 for the 76-39 final. Inside The Stats: Bowdoin held a 39-27 advantage in rebounding, including a 16-3 lead in offensive boards. The Polar Bears scored 21 of their 76 points off of second chance buckets. Bowdoin committed just 10 turnovers in the game compared to 21 from the Huskies. The Polar Bears converted 27 points from the Husky miscues. Bowdoin made 10 threes in the game shooting 10-for-31 (32.3 percent).
