Gorham, ME — GORHAM, Maine – Anna Barry had a monster double-double with 24 points, 20 rebounds and added seven blocked shots to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 62-45 win over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference women's basketball match up Thursday night at Hill Gymnasium. Barry was 11-for-12 from the field to lead the game in both scoring and rebounding. Her 20 rebounds helped Eastern Connecticut to a decisive 56-28 edge on the glass. Jenna Serrantino was the only other Warrior in double figures with 10 points. Mariah Dunn had eight points and five rebounds, while Martha Chatman had 11 rebounds off of the bench. Southern Maine freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) had 17 points, five rebounds and two assists for the Huskies. Junior Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine) added nine points, while junior Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) tossed in seven points. Junior Ashlee Aceto (South Portland, Maine) had a team-high seven rebounds. How It Happened: With the scored tied at 8-8 following a Vaughan free throw, Eastern Connecticut outscored the Huskies 8-2 in the final five minutes of the first quarter to take the lead for good. Barry scored seven of her 24 points in the first quarter. Eastern Connecticut used back-to-back buckets from Barry and threes from Jenna Serrantino and Jaclyn Santella to open the second with a 10-0 run to lead 26-10 with 5:36 left in the half. A three from Vaughan started a 7-0 run the Huskies, trimming their deficit to 26-17 with 3:28 to play. A steal and a layup from Barry and one free throw from Chatman closed out the Eastern scoring in the second, while Vaughan scored in the paint for USM for a 29-19 halftime score in favor of the Warriors. At the half, Barry had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. The Huskies and the Warriors exchanged scored in the first four minutes, and a jumper from USM freshman Emma Haskell (Hampden, Maine) made it 33-23 with 6:14 to play before Eastern rattled off eight straight for a 41-23 lead. Serrantino scored six of her 10 points in the run. Eastern led 47-30 headed into the fourth. Barry gave the Warriors a 20 point lead, 50-30, with a steal and a layup at the 9:10 mark. However, Southern Maine ran off a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to trail by 12, 54-42, with 4:25 to play. Vaughan scored five points in the run, including a tradition three-point play, while Fleming had four. The Warriors responded however scored the next eight points of the game to lead 62-42 with 1`:15 to go. The Huskies were 0-for-6 during that stretch. Haskell scored the final points of the game for Southern Maine for the 62-45 final with a three. Inside The Stats: Eastern outscored USM 36-20 in the paint led by Barry's dominating presence. Collecting 22 offensive rebounds, the Warriors scored 20 of their 62 points off of second-chance efforts. The Huskies' Vaughan has scored in double digits in her last five games consecutively.
