Tustin, CA — The Foothill Knights invaded the Northrup Stadium at Tustin High School and took on Northwood High School to kick off the 2022-2023 season. The Knights came out strong and never looked back as they secured a 5-0 victory over the visiting Timberwolves. Senior Kevin Ambrosio started off the scoring with a quick strike in the 9th minute and followed it up with another in the 11th minute - both goals scoring from open play. Sophmore Trent Samaha noted another goal in the 21st minute - again the result of solid teamwork and connection from open play. The Knights have begun to find a rhythm and have created and capitalized on opportunities that have presented themselves. Senior Joey Benítez poached a goal in the 36th minute when the opposing keeper bobbled a dangerous ball sent into the box from a free kick by Junior Dylan Hicks. Senior Dylan Salazar also scored from a direct kick in the 73rd minute. Salazar drove a 45 yard ball in on target and the keeper was unable to keep the ball out of the net. The Knights had numerous opportunities in front of goal but this wrapped up the scoring on the evening. Senior Tommy Gunther got his first Varsity start between the posts and secured the clean sheet to start off the season. Foothill maintained the shutout thanks to Gunther's sure hands and a strong defensive effort from the Knights back line. The Knights face off with Century HS on Friday at 7pm at the Foothill HS turf field.
