Tustin, CA — This one was hard to watch...and it's been just as hard to write and relive. The Tillers came into the game undefeated with a 6-0-1 record, coming off a 1-0 win versus Beckman. The Knights were 3-1 coming off the 0-1 loss to Beckman. Foothill came out of the gate with a solid game plan and executed it very well. The game was back and forth with both sides having dangerous chances. The scoring broke open with a penalty kick by senior Joey Benitez in the 20th minute. The penalty was set up by a through ball played into the box by sophomore Trent Samaha and sophomore Jacob Garcia beat the keeper to the ball but was taken down before he could score. The half was tense with a slight edge to Foothill and went into the break 1-0. The second half saw more of the same back and forth play and Foothill struck next in the 60th minute with a through ball played into senior Nelson Suriel by junior Tyler Valdez. Nelly buried the ball to the near post in the upper right hand corner over the keeper's outstretched hand. Then the wheels came off... Tustin was awarded a penalty for a dive outside the box with 10 minutes left in the match. Tustin converted the penalty making the score 2-1. Tustin responded with 2 more goals off of second and third balls played into the box in the last 5 minutes. There were many things that still don't sit well with this loss and I am left scratching my head given the calls in the last 10 minutes. We can only focus on the things that we can control and improve on as a group but this was a tough pill to swallow. The game ended 2-3 in favor of Tustin High School. Foothill takes on Irvine away at their stadium Friday at 5pm.
