Santa Maria, CA — Daniel Burke’s field goal with 20 seconds left extended the game, but the Moorpark College football team eventually fell 20-17 in overtime at visiting Allan Hancock College in the Strawberry Bowl on Saturday afternoon in Santa Maria. After Arath Acosta’s 45-yard field goal gave Hancock the lead in the first possession of overtime, Burke couldn’t match from 44 yards after the Raiders went three and out. Macloud Crowton completed 20 of 40 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns for Moorpark (6-5), which was making its first bowl appearance since 2016. Safety Daniel Pierce led Moorpark College football with 10 tackles in Saturday's Strawberry Bowl loss at Allan Hancock College River Stout caught nine passes for 145 yards and Arcelles Johnson caught eight passes for 111 yards and two scores. Running back Gabe Landless (Royal High) ran for 54 yards on 14 carries. Hancock running back Latrell Brown ran for 158 yards and a TD on 18 carries. Moorpark earned a bowl berth after finishing second at 4-1 in the SCFA Pacific Conference and drew a matchup at former Western State Conference foe Hancock, which finished with a share of the title in the top-tier National Division's Northern Conference. “It was a great game to play against a National Division opponent," said Moorpark sophomore safety Daniel Pierce, who is a Pacifica High graduate. “Shutting them out for the first half is something we should be proud of.” After a scoreless first half, Crowton hit Johnson for TD passes of 38 and 31 yards in the third quarter, putting Moorpark ahead 14-7 after three quarters. Hancock retook the lead 17-14 on Esekielu Storer’s 65-yard scoring strike to Jaleel Walker on the first play of the fourth quarter and Acosta’s 41-yard field goal with 2:40 to play. Moorpark nearly won the game with a late 10-play, 78-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Luke Rassmussen came off the bench to convert two fourth downs to move the Raiders to the Hancock 1-yard line in the final minute. "It was awesome watching that on the sideline with my (defensive back) brothers," Pierce said. But Burke was called on to extend the game with a 22-yard field goal on fourth-and goal-with 20 seconds to play. Pierce had 10 tackles, Arnulfo Morales (Moorpark High) had a sack and Zayden Hoots recovered two fumbles. “It was a great experience," Pierce said. "I’m glad that we all stuck through it after the 4-6 season last year. We were able to come back and make a bowl game this season.” Moorpark at Allan Hancock - Allan Hancock 11/26/2022 - 1:00 PM Moorpark 17 Allan Hancock 20 Scoring 1 2 3 4 OT Final Moorpark (4-7, 3) 0 0 14 3 0 17 Allan Hancock (6-5, 2) 0 0 7 10 3 20 Moorpark vs. Allan Hancock (11/26/2022 1:00 PM at Allan Hancock) Score by Quarters 1 2 3 4 OT Final Moorpark (4-7) 0 0 14 3 0 17 Allan Hancock (6-5) 0 0 7 10 3 20 Qtr Time Scoring Play 3rd 13:35 Allan Hancock - Latrell Brown 66 yd run.
