Danbury, CT — DANBURY, Conn. – Nicole Vivian scored a a game-high 13 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 48-39 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. Southern Maine freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) and sophomore Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine) led the Huskies with 12 and 10 points respectively. Junior Ashlee Aceto (South Portland, Maine) added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. The Records: Southern Maine (4-10 2-5 Little East) Western Connecticut (11-3, 4-2 Little East) How It Happened: Southern Maine led 6-0 to start and jumped out to an 8-2 lead following a jumper from Aceto, but the Wolves stormed back to tie the game up at 12-12 with 2:00 to play in the first quarter following a layup from Vivian. WestConn scored the first seven points of the second quarter and outscored USM 25-13 over the second and third quarter to lead 37-25 headed into the fourth quarter. USM was 2-for-7 from the field in the second quarter with nine turnovers and 3-for-8 in the third with seven turnovers. In the fourth, Southern Maine twice pulled two within two possessions of the Wolves, and trailed 42-36 after a pair of free throws from Vaughan at the 2:36 mark, but Western stayed in front the rest of the way. USM outscored WestConn 14-11 in the fourth. Inside The Stats: Southern Maine gave up 18 second-chance points, allowing WestConn to grab 14 offensive rebounds. The Huskies committed more than two-thirds of their 21 turnovers in the second and third quarters. Southern Maine shot just 29.2 percent (14-for-48) from the field.
