Guyton, GA — The Savannah Country Day Hornets traveled to the Corral on Friday February 10th to take on the South Effingham Mustangs lacrosse team. The mustangs opened the scoring two and a half minutes in when Tyler Stogner drove to his right from the top of the box, beating not one, but two double teams by the defense, while drawing a penalty and finishing with a right handed shot to the far pipe! The mustangs would play stingy defense and patient offense for the first eight minutes and twenty seconds of the first quarter maintaining their one point lead until Country Day tied it up with just under four minutes go. The one one tie would be broken just seconds later when an unfortunate slip in the midfield defense allowed a Hornet to waltz right in on our goalie scoring the go ahead goal. Just a minute later after a costly penalty on the mustangs, the Hornets were able to convert on an extra man (man up) opportunity to extend their lead to 2 with 2:22 left in the first. Sophomore goalie Julio Aponte would make an amazing one on one save to stifle a Country Day fast break off the faceoff, but the turnover bug that plagued the mustangs in the Evans contest reared it's ugly head yet again. Both teams would give the ball back and forth to one another on consecutive turnovers, giving Country Day another opportunity with just over two minutes to go in the quarter. The Hornets would capitalize on the opportunity with their best shooter, attackman #8 Arden Watson scoring their 4th unanswered goal of the first quarter giving Country Day a 4-1 lead going into the second quarter. Country Day would continue to capitalize on myriad turnovers from the Mustangs who couldn't seem to get out of their own way and gave the ball back to the Hornets after great saves by their goalie, and strong defensive holds time after time. The Hornets would seem to be on offense or extra man (man up) for the 2nd and 3rd quarters, extending their lead to 12-1 going into the 4th. It would be 39 minutes since Tyler Stogners opening goal when he would find a cutting Lincoln Seigrist on the crease during an extra man opportunity for the Mustangs second goal of the contest. Country Day would respond with two more tallies before the Mustangs would once again show their heart and resiliency, digging deep in the 4th qaurter. With under two minutes to go in the game, Nathan Brown would win a face off only to have the ball put back on the turf after great defensive pressure from Country Day. Rookie Freshman Jakey Connely would win a huge ground ball, weaving through traffic and finding Junior Attackman Kaden DeGenaro just over the midfield. Kaden would drive toward the middle of the field and spot a streaking Adan Saturday ahead of the defense. Junior rookie Adan Saturday would score his first ever goal as a mustang and bring the score to 15-3. The mustangs proved yet again that there is no quit in them battling until the final whistle. Country Day played a great game with a very impressive ride forcing all those mustang turnovers. Rick Barron, the Country Day head coach had very kind words about the heart, hustle and athleticism of our team.
