Sandy Hook, CT — After breaking a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth inning, only to see visiting Brookfield plate the tying run in the top of the sixth, Newtown High School’s baseball team got the bats going with a four spot in the bottom of the frame. Starting pitcher Will Burns finished off a gem and the Nighthawks posted a 5-1 win over the Bobcats on May 1. Burns allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out 11 batters for the victory. “He had his stuff today,” Newtown Coach Ian Thoesen said. Jamie Piccuillo had two hits and drove in a pair of runs and Yarema Stasyshyn collected three hits, including a double, drove in a run, and scored twice. Danny Leyva had a hit, run batted in, and run scored. Dhilan Amin had a hit and run scored, and Josh Rosen walked and scored. The Nighthawks lost 3-2 at Immaculate of Danbury on April 28. Rosen doubled and drove in both runs. The Hawks scored single runs in each the first and third innings but could not hang on as a trio of errors led to a pair of unearned runs. Piccuillo pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits; he walked three and struck out two. Amin allowed two unearned runs on one hit and one walk in 1.1 innings, and Burns pitched a hitless inning, fanning two.
