Grand Rapids, MI — Caledonia, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University continued their success on Friday's with a sweep in today's doubleheader against Davenport University. The two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) wins make the Cardinals 9-0 on Friday's this season. SVSU (14-15, 6-6) won the seven-inning game 5-1 and the nine-inning contest 14-4 against DU (13-19, 7-5). In game 1, Tyler McLaren (W, 6-0) had a standout day pitching all seven innings in game one and allowed only one run on seven hits and struck out three. After two scoreless innings, SVSU got on the board in the top of the third. Jaccar Watkins walked to lead it off and Colin Cornwell doubled him home on the next at-bat. After Cornwell was advanced to third on a ground out, Martin Money knocked him in with an RBI single giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. They extended the lead manufacturing three runs in the top of the sixth with their baserunning. Jeffrey Reseigh and Brandon Scheurer both reached to start the inning. Reseigh scored on a fielder's choice and error by the pitcher allowing Scheurer to move to third and the batter, Connor McClennen, to reach second. The next at-bat was one of the most exciting plays for SVSU with a ball that didn't leave the infield. A double sacrifice squeeze play with Tucker Roe laying down the bunt and both Scheurer and McClennen scoring making it 5-0. All five runs were against Davenport starter Carson Fischer (L, 3-5) who threw 5 1/3 innings with eight hits and four walks against. The Panthers tallied one run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be it for game one.
