Winneconne, WI — Our girls season came to an abrupt end on a beautiful summer night in Winneconne. Port got out to a hot start with two runs in the 1st with a triple to lead off the game by sophomore Sierra Miller, and a big home run by sophomore Hope Gilhooly. Winneconne answered with a big inning of there own scoring 6 runs in the 3rd and in the end that proved to be all they would need. Port had chances in the 2nd when Sierra walked and sister Savanna Miller singled, but the Knights pitcher Youngbauer made quality pitches to retire the middle of the lineup. Things again looked promising in the top of the fourth when freshman Claudia Ryder singled to lead off the inning but again, Youngbauer mowed down the Port hitters in big moments of the game. The bright spot for the Pirates defensively came from Hope Gilhooly behind the plate as she caught two runners stealing and picked off her 10th stranded base runner of the year. There were a lot of great takeaways from the season and some very important improvements from our young players. When 3 freshman and 5 sophomores start in a playoff game, you know the future looks very bright for Port Washington Softball.
