Whittier, CA — It was a big opening night for the Raiders as they hit the road to compete against Whittier High School. The Raiders came out sluggish in the first half, but capitalized on an early fumble recovery by Junior Mike Lozano, which led to an early 12 yard rushing score by Sophomore Aiden Peru. The Raiders offense dominated the second half, with Junior Anthony Abad striking for a 10 yard Touchdown run early in the third quarter. Abad would not be the only Raider to find the end zone, as Senior quarterback Landon Martin quickly found Senior Tyler Robertson on the next series for a 43 yard touchdown reception. Martin would then turn to Junior Olin Morales-Hyder, connecting on touchdown catches of 31 yards and 9 yards. Junior Brady Ackerman also turned in a note-worthy performance, ending the night with two catches for 71 yards. Senior Quarterback Landon Martin turned in an efficient performance, going 8-11 for 183 yards with three touchdown passes. Defensively, the Raiders ended any threat from the Cardinals, allowing just 6 points scored on the night whilst holding the Whittier offense to 218 total yards on 55 plays. Junior Linebacker Andrew Chavez led the way for the Raiders defensive attack, securing 11 tackles, including 4 solo tackles. Chavez worked with Senior Linebacker Gabriel Bagdanoff, who finished the night with 8 tackles, including 3 solo tackles. Junior Mike Lozano secured the lone turnover, recovering a fumble on the Cardinals first possession of the night. Sonora (1-0) hosts Vincent Memorial (1-0) in a 5PM contest at Home this Friday (La Habra District Stadium), and it is also Youth Night. We will see you all there!
