Whittier, CA — The Sonora Raiders looked to spoil the fun facing off against the Cal High Condors in front of a homecoming crowd on Friday night at Cal High School. Offense was the name of the game on Friday night, and the Condors scored quickly on the opening possession of the game to get things started. The Raiders offense and their Wing-T running attack quickly countered, scoring on consecutive possessions to take a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Cal counter-punched with a score of their own, and the teams appeared locked in a shootout. Sonora's defense came up with a few big stops in the second quarter, and the offense was able to contribute an additional 14 points to take a 28-21 lead into half. Costly turnovers for Cal in the third and fourth quarter allowed the Raiders to pull away late in the game, and secure a 41-28 victory. Sonora had all three running backs contributing in their balanced rushing attack, as the trio of Nick Fernandez (Sr.), Tyler Robertson (Sr.), and Anthony Abad (Jr.) rushed for 375 yards on 34 combined carries. Fernandez led the way with 114 yards and two Touchdowns, while Robertson rushed for 114 yard and a touchdown, and Abad pitched in 118 yards on 12 carries for three touchdowns. The Raiders offensive line took a step forward this week, generating running lanes and positive plays all night for the Raiders' backfield attack. Senior Quarterback Landon Martin took to the air when needed, completing 5 of 9 passes for 89 yards, including a key 40 yard completion to Junior Wide Receiver Olin Morales Hyder. The Raiders were led defensively this week by Junior Outside Linebacker Brady Ackerman, tallying five solo tackles and three assists to slow down the Condor offense. Junior Linebacker Andrew Chavez also had a notable performance, securing 4 solo tackles and 4 assists. The Raiders defense forced two turnovers in the second half to put the game away, with a forced fumbled from Chavez and an interception from Junior Safety Olin Morales Hyder. Sonora heads into the bye week with a 4-1 record, and will be idle this week. Cal falls to 0-5 on the season, and is also on a bye this week. The Raiders open league play on Friday, September 29th as they open league play with a road matchup against Sunny Hills High School (3-2). We will see you there! #OurWay
