Irvine, CA — By Daryl Bogard University Trojan Stadium was aglow Friday night with our varsity football team ready to play tough! ASB pulled out all their support with a “neon night” and the brightness in the stands was blinding! Dana Hills took the opening kickoff and were held to just a field goal after a 10-minute drive. The Trojans changed the complexion of the game late in the first quarter with Jr DB Damari Carter’s pick six, giving Uni a 7-3 lead after Skye Murphy’s PAT. Murphy later just missed a 45-yard FG just barely wide left in his opinion, with plenty of length. Dana Hills came from behind, breaking open a close game with 12 seconds to go in the first half on a 67-yard pick six by Sr Deacon Hill. Dana Hills increased the lead to 14-7 with the following two-point conversion pass from Myles Van Wyhe to Charlie Eckl. LB / RB / K Deacon Hill was the proverbial one-man wrecking crew responsible for 23 of Dana Hills’ 31 points. He booted field goals in the first, second and fourth quarters and added a 5-yard TD run, two extra points and another interception in the fourth quarter. Uni had 160 yards from the line of scrimmage (66 run, 94 pass), but not quite enough to outperform Dana Hills with 207 yards from the line of scrimmage (146 run, 61 pass). Return yardage favored Dana Hills with 133 on interception returns, 10 on a punt return and 38 on a kickoff return. Uni had 26 on interception returns, 0 on punt returns and 116 on kickoff returns. The Trojans had 66 yards on the ground on 24 carries, with just 4 of them for loss. Sr RB Jai Williams carried the ball 18 times for 73 yards. Dana Hills had 146 yards on the ground on 35 attempts consisting of 193 for gain and 47 for loss (9 carries). Quarterback Sr Blaine Anderson had 94 yards passing going 10 for 29, whereas Dana Hills was 9 for 19 for 61 yards. There were 8 interceptions in the game with DHHS picking 5 and Uni snagging 3 (Carter, Ryan Shabbak and Brooks Beckmann). Among the Trojans receiving corps, Beckmann had 3 catches for 49 yards; Jonathan Soto and Luke Edwards each had 2 catches for 13 yards; Jake Rabold had a pair for 10 yards and Asger Ross had one for 9 yards. Beckmann had 139 all-purpose yards (49 receiving, 90 on 3 kickoff returns and 0 on the interception). The Uni defense was active with 11 plays going for loss (9 rushing and 2 receiving). Owen Chiou was involved in three first half sacks / tackles for loss. Richard Bines, Eithar Takesh, Beckmann and Williams were active on defense. Next Game: Portola Bulldogs
