Oxnard, CA — Vince Mueller’s 25-yard field goal with 7:29 to play was the difference as the Buena High football team edged host Oxnard 24-23 in a Channel League game Friday night at Howser Field. “For the second week in a row, we were able to do enough to find a way to win in a tight game,” Buena coach Ryan Bolland said. “Which is a good thing for kids to learn.” Joey Reynoso, a transfer from Ventura High, made his first start as Buena quarterback and threw 24-yard TD passes to Quinn Linker and Tyler Hoff. “He brought some mobility to our quarterback position,” Bolland said. “He was able to scramble for yards, which was a spark. He definitely brought a new dimension.” Linebacker Trevor McCormick also had an interception return for a TD for Buena (4-3, 4-1), which won its third straight game to move into a second-place tie with Santa Barbara in the league standings. Buena can clinch a postseason berth by beating either Rio Mesa on the road this Friday or rival Ventura on Oct. 13. “The goal is the next one,” Bolland said. “We’ll just have that mentality until we’re done playing.”
