Tustin, CA — Foothill welcomed El Modena to the Northrup Stadium on a cold winter Wednesday night to kick off Century Conference play. The Century conference is made up of 8 teams separated into 2 leagues, Crestview, the upper league, and North Hills, the lower league. Each sport (as well as gender) arranges and reallocates the 8 teams into the 2 leagues every 2 years. For Mens Soccer, El Modena, Yorba Linda, Brea Olinda, and Esperanza are currently in North Hills League. Foothill, Canyon, Villa Park, and El Dorado are in Crestview League. Each team plays conference teams from the other league once and from its own league twice, in a home and away format. Only the games from within your league count towards the team's league standing. The Knights came into the match 8-3-4 and on a 2 game win streak and still unbeaten at home. The Vanguards were 4-2-3 having lost their last match. Foothill controlled the pace of the game from the onset and were constantly hunting. The scoring opened up in the 6th minute as Tyler Valdez played the ball in from the corner and the keeper bobbled the ball. El Modena had moments where they were dangerous on the counterattack but had no goals at the end of the half to show for it. The Knights continued to pressure the opposition, were unlucky to hit the post a few times, but also had no additional results at the half, leading 1-0. Foothill came out in the second half with a little more determination and composure as Tyler Valdez found Matthew Medoza through the middle. Matty beat the keeper and lasered the ball off the bottom right post but was quick enough to pick up his own ricochet before the keeper could regain his feet to put the Knights up 2-0. Matty added another just 7 minutes later in the 60th minutes as Kai Futagaki found him wide open at the top of the box in the middle of the field. The Knights take on a surging Yorba Linda on Friday away at their field. The Knights look to keep their win streak alive and set the tone for what looks to be another very difficult Crestview League season. Foothill returns home to host Canyon on Wednesday and El Dorado on Friday, both at 7pm on FHS turf field under the lights. Come out and support your Knights.
