Covina, CA — COVINA — If the Los Altos High softball team is make a run in next month’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, it will need to execute in the clutch. The Conquerors showed that part of their game Tuesday. Senior Bailey Chavez knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and Savannah Diederich was dominant in the circle to lead Los Altos to a 2-0 victory over host Charter Oak in a key Hacienda League game. Chavez was 2 for 3 with the RBI and Diederich stuck out 10 while giving up four hits for the Conquerors (19-2, 3-0), who are ranked No. 1 in the area and No. 5 in Division 1 this week. Janny Owen and Morgan Salgado had doubles for Charter Oak (8-3 1-1), which is ranked No. 7 in the area. “We knew they were going to give it their all,” Chavez said. “Everyone in this league is out to get us. We just talked about staying true to our game, making the plays (to get the win). “(This win) gives us confidence to know we can pull through in those clutch situations, get those hits and make those plays.” The teams went scoreless in the first four innings before Chavez came up big in the fifth inning. Mikayla Ceballos led off the inning with single and pinch-runner Shyanne Sanchez advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Chavez followed with a line-drive single for a 1-0 lead. “There were two outs,” Chavez said. “I was thinking to just get something in the grass, allow my runner to score. That’s what I did.” The Conquerors pushed the advantage to 2-0 in the sixth on an RBI single by Brianna Santos. “We always talk about two-out clutch hitting, and I believe both runs came with two outs,” Los Altos coach Lydell McCullough said. “Sometimes, you have to get wins when you’re not playing your best. Their pitcher (Taylor Greene) did a good job keeping the ball down. But we got the clutch hits when we needed them.” Diederich took care of the rest. She wasn’t dominant, but came through when she needed to. Owen led off the second with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. But Diederich struck out the next two batters.
