Norwalk, CT — The Trumbull and Stamford boys soccer teams staged one of the classic FCIAC championship games in league history Thursday night. In an overtime thriller, Trumbull won its second-straight FCIAC title with a 3-2 win over Stamford on overtime goals by Owen Bull and Jack DiGiovanni. “It feels amazing, there is nothing better,” DiGiovanni said. “I didn’t think the ball was going to come to me. I got it as far as back post can go and it felt great. We are resilient and we come back from anything. It was a great game overall.” What will standout about this game for a long time will be the final two minutes of regulation when Stamford’s Mateusz Gazdzicki scored with 1:20 left to tie the game 1-1. Then as time expired, Stamford defender Owen Fedeli saved the day, clearing a ball bound to be the game winner off the back line to send the game to overtime. The excitement was not over as Trumbull scored twice in the first overtime before Stamford got back within one with 43 seconds remaining in the first extra session. Stamford had chances to tie it in the second overtime but eventually just ran out of time to give Trumbull its fifth FCIAC title since 2016 and third in the last four tournaments held. Stamford, which last won an FCIAC title in 1997, nearly completed a magical run that included a win over Ludlowe via a shootout in the quarterfinals, a victory over No. 1 seed Staples in the semis on a late goal and nearly shocking Trumbull. “It’s unbelievable how much fight they had. We have seen it all this season. They are a special group,” Stamford coach Mike Summa said. “Trumbull is an awesome team and perennial winner. To be this close and to lose is tough. I am proud of them, and I love them the way I have never loved any team before. It’s amazing what a group can do when they are all fighting for each other.” Trumbull scored the game’s first goal with 9:20 to play when Bull fed a through ball to Mateus Almeida, who then dribbled in and beat the keeper. That would hold until Stamford took its first shot on a goal of the game with 1:20 to go. On a set piece following a foul, a ball was sent in and Gazdzicki got his head on it to tie the game. In overtime, Bull got a direct kick from about 20 yards out and placed it in the near upper corner to make it 2-1. Four minutes later, Dylan Moreira sent in a corner kick, which DiGiovanni tapped in. A corner kick by Stamford resulted in the Black Knights hitting the crossbar twice before Fedeli drove the ball home for a score. “Toward the end of the regular season, our performances were a little inconsistent. I got the feeling they were waiting for the postseason to arrive which is a dangerous thing to do because it is hard to flip the switch, but I guess these boys can flip the switch,” Trumbull coach Sil Vitiello said. “This one, given the fact we struggled a little bit, is a little bit different than last year. The journey was different, but we are right back here and that’s all that matters.” The game will be the last FCIAC final at Testa Field for some time as a new Norwalk High is scheduled to begin construction the spring where Testa now stands. Player of the Game Owen Bull, Trumbull: Bull set the pace for the Trumbull offense all night and his brilliant pass in the second half led to the first goal and his free kick in overtime was as well-placed as a shot could be. Quotable “To have the composure to play how we did in overtime was incredible. Owen draws the foul and he scored on a similar free kick to the far post against McMahon, they may have seen the film, I don’t know, but he got them to the near post today.” – Sil Vitiello Trumbull 3 Stamford 2 (OT) STAMFORD 0 1 1 0 — 2 TRUMBULL 0 1 2 0 — 3 Goals: T — Mateus Almeida, Owen Bull, Jack DiGiovanni.
