Berwick, PA — From the Standard Speaker A high-octane offense and pressing defense have fueled Hazleton Area girls’ basketball team’s fast start to the season. At Berwick on Wednesday, the Lady Cougars’ offense didn’t rack up points as easily as they had in recent games, but their defense was on point. They limited the Lady Bulldogs to six first-half points, including only one in the second quarter, en route to a 47-23 Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 victory for their seventh straight win. Freshman Kaitlyn Bindas led the offense with 15 points, six coming in the first quarter as Hazleton Area set the tone with a 16-5 start. Olivia Williams helped with two triples in the quarter. Sophia Shults finished with nine points, Kayla Lagowy added seven and Sophia Benyo had six. Alysa Lewis topped Berwick with eight points. No teammate had more than five.
