Dallas, PA — From the Standard Speaker Dallas tried its best to match the high-flying Hazleton Area girls' basketball team on Wednesday. Three Mountaineers scored in double digits and another had nine points; the visiting Lady Cougars placed four players in double figures. Dallas put up 20 points in the third quarter; Hazleton Area countered with 22. The Mountaineers shot 22 of 25 from the foul line; the Lady Cougars were 16 of 18. When all was said and done, the Lady Cougars left Dallas with a 63-50 victory, their 12th straight and seventh without a loss in Wyoming Valley Conference play to put them two games ahead of both Dallas and Crestwood in the Division 1 standings. The difference: Hazleton Area made seven 3-point field goals, including three apiece by freshman Kaitlyn Bindas and three by sophomore Alexis Reimold, to only two for Dallas. Bindas knocked down all three of her triples and teammate Sophia Shults added another in the first quarter to stake the Lady Cougars to a 14-9 lead and forced Dallas to play from behind all night. With the game turning sloppy in the second period. the locals still held an 8-7 edge for a 22-16 halftime advantage. When the pace picked up after the teams returned from their respective locker rooms, Reimold had the hot hand with 12 points to offset the nine scored by the Mountaineers' Moly Walsh. The Lady Cougars then salted the game away from the free throw line, going 13 of 14. They also held Dallas to just four field goals to keep the Mountaineers from mounting a comeback. Reimold finished with a game and season-high 17 points to lead Hazleton Area. Bindas added 15, Shults 12 and Sophia Benyo 10. Walsh paced her team with 13 points, but only two field goals. Elizabeth Viglone tossed in 12, Mia Delgaudio 10 and Brianna Casey nine. Sofia Rodgers scored 10 points to spark the Lady Cougars to a 49-12 win in the junior varsity game. Hazleton Area gets back on the bus for a trip to Tunkhannock on Friday.
