Westborough, MA — After a week off, there was a little rust on the Mountaineers as they got outshot 14-4 in the first period of this tilt. Shrewsbury scored firs at 4:19 on a power play goal to take a 1-0 advantage, but Parker Meyer scored a power play goal for Wachusett at 7:25 with assists going to Matt Bjorkman and Cody Penniman. Shrewsbury would score at 12:30 to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Junior forward Matt Bjorkman would tie the score at 2 just 35 seconds into the second period with a great hustle goal out of the corner. Meyer and Jason Flaherty assisted on the goal. Just a few minutes later, Wachusett would be called for a Major Penalty for boarding to put the Colonials on a 5-minutes power play. Shrewsbury scored two goals in a 10 second span that put them out front 4-2. But at the 5:57 mark, Parker Meyer would score an unassisted shorthanded goal that gave the momentum back to Wachusett. Jason Flaherty scored at 10:59 to tie the game at 4 with assists going to Nick Brousseau and Cody Penniman. And at 14:08, senior captain Parker Meyer would complete his hat trick with another power play goal on assists by Flaherty and our other senior captain Thomas Willman. This goal game Wachusett a 5-4 goal heading into the third period. The score would remain the same until under 2 minutes left in the game when Shrewsbury scored the equalizer at 13:06. Although both teams had opportunities to win in the final seconds, the game would go to overtime tied at 5. Cody Penniman created a great scoring opportunity in the first minute of OT, but the Colonial goalie made a great save. But, at 1:42 of the extra frame, Shrewsbury would score on a wrister from the left circle to win 6-5. Freshman goalie Kevin Shaw made 28 saves in the contest as Wachusett dropped its second in a row to fall to 5 and 3 on the season.
