Amsterdam, NY — BHBL Varsity Spartans snatched the lead late in their 9-6 win over CBA Varsity. The game was tied at 6 in the top of the eighth when Christopher Puliafico singled, scoring two runs. The ball got by the center fielder for CBA and scored a third run on the play and Puliafico ended up at second base. Logan McNeal, Hunter Rauhauser and Atticus Marvin, the bottom three of the Spartan lineup, combined for 5 out of the team’s 10 hits, scoring once and driving in 4. CBA got on the board in the bottom of the first with a long double over the Marvin’s head in center field, scoring James Dixon from third. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch and a McNeal clutch single. CBA went back on top with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings each. Burnt Hills came right back in the top of the sixth when pinch runner Max Weisman stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Rauhauser infield single. They scored 3 more in the top of the 7th to take the lead 6-5. Jack Sunkes walked in a run after a long at bat and McNeal singled in two more. Timmy Venditti came on to close it out, but a walk, passed ball and single tied it up at 6 and force the game to extra innings. A bases loaded single by Puliafico plated two, with a third run scoring on an error on the Brothers center fielder. Venditti was dominant in the eighth inning to earn the win and put the game away. Ben Yerina started for the Spartans, lasting 4 innings, scattering 4 hits with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks. Mason McDonald and Dom Morey both made their varsity debuts with an inning each on the mound in relief. Chris McLaughlin took the loss in relief. He followed starter Matt Sgambatti, Good and Premo for CBA. The Spartans tallied 10 hits, led by 2 each from Puliafico, McNeal and Marvin. The Spartans will play next on Tuesday 4/9 at Averill Park. Game time is set for 4:15 pm.
